DIN 53160 Saliva · two-part kit
The artificial saliva as a 2-part formula, calcium in one part, phosphate in the other. Neither part is supersaturated, so the shelf life is the kit's and not the fluid's.

Composition & Formulation
- Part A: magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium chlorides
- Part B: dipotassium phosphate and potassium carbonate
- Mixed volume for volume, then adjusted to pH 6.8 with 1 % hydrochloric acid
- Six inorganic salts in total, exactly as the standard lists them
Available Formats & Packaging
- 2 × 250 mL · makes 500 mL
- 2 × 500 mL · makes 1 L
Main Function & Applications
What limits ready-to-use saliva is not microbiology but crystallography: calcium and hydrogen phosphate share the bottle and the medium is supersaturated in brushite. Split them and nothing nucleates.
User Sectors & Laboratories
- Toy and childcare testing
- Consumer goods CROs
- Packaging & print
- Quality departments
Good to know
The 1 % hydrochloric acid that brings the mixture to pH 6.8 is not supplied with the kit. Pour part A into part B, never the other way round. Calcium arriving in a large volume of phosphate disperses; phosphate poured into calcium seeds crystals that never redissolve.
Certificate of Analysis (CoA) & Traceability
- pH of each part
- Calcium on part A
- Phosphate on part B
- Reconstitution check
